Dear
Far Horizons travelers,
I had the good fortune to travel to Egypt
in March
with Dr. Bob Brier (author of The Murder of
Tutankhamen) on what was undoubtedly one of the most
memorable trips that I’ve ever experienced. We were taken
into private areas of several archaeological sites, and no less
than five tombs closed to the public were opened for us to enter.
What an incredible experience to be the only people inside the
beautiful tomb of Nefetari, the magnificent vault of Seti I,
and the Great Pyramid at Giza! We offer this trip again in 2005;
please see our schedule.
Other
exciting upcoming trips include Turkish
Treasures with our renowned Umit Isin as study leader in
August and Hike
the Inka Trail with Dr. Clark Erickson in August. Explore
Easter
Island with Dr. Georgia Lee in
September. Explore remote areas of Scotland
with archaeologist, Christopher Bowles in July. Shed your sober
outlook on the world and travel on our Archaeological
Pub Crawl of Great Britain in September where meals and
overnights will be in traditional, charming watering holes in
remote areas of England and Scotland. Journey through India
in December and spend overnights in palace-hotels.
We
can offer you exciting new destinations over the
next year. In November, Dr. E.C. Krupp, the Director of
the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, shows us the
archaeo-astronomy
of Italy. In December we will explore
the splendors of Vietnam. Join Professor Bin Wong to
journey across the Silk
Road of China in August 2005.
Join Dr. Michael D. Coe to Bhutan
in September 2005.
And
consider a camping tour of northern Sudan with
Dr. Bob Brier – scheduled for October 2005. Ask
for brochures!

Cannot Capture
Egypt’s Majesty
Dr.
Rita Freed leads our February 2005 trip. Here is her view
of Egypt.
How
many times have I been to Egypt? I’ve lost track. But
I
know that each time I go, I am reminded why I made a decision
to pursue a career in this marvelous ancient civilization.
And so much archaeological work is taking place now, and with
each visit I see something new. The Nile still mesmerizes
me, as life as it was in Biblical times plays out on its banks.
No pictures do Egypt justice.
Walking
through the columned halls of Karnak you feel the presence
of the ancient gods and understand why religion played a major
role in the daily life of the ancient Egyptians. Standing
in front of the pyramids you experience their majesty. As
you suddenly come upon the 65’ high statues of Ramesses
the Great at his rock cut temple at Abu Simbel you instantly
understand how art is propaganda too. What ancient Nubian
would dare attack after sailing downstream and confronting
those?
I
am constantly reminded that Egypt has many layers. Of course
the pharaonic monuments are the ones we first hear about.
But Judaism and Christianity came early to Egypt and left
their mark. In Medieval times, Cairo was the jewel of the
Islamic world and its art and architecture is unparalleled.
And who can describe modern Egypt? One aspect that is unchanged
since the beginning of Egypt’s civilization is the hospitality
of its people.
